Abstract : This report identifies the human factors engineering technologies or tools presently used, and projected for use, by human factors specialists. Both traditional and advanced tools were included in the report, although the emphasis was on advanced computer applications. Human factors practitioners representing the government, the military academe, and private industry were surveyed to identify those tools that are most frequently used or viewed as most important for conducting human factors engineering-related work. If advanced tool capabilities did not meet existing job requirements, the specialists identified the types of tools they would like to see developed to fill the existing technology gaps. The advanced tools were categorized using an 8-point classification scheme that included the phase(s) of the materiel acquisition process in which the tool's application would be most appropriate. The tools were prioritized to facilitate tool selection and entered into a data base that could accommodate future revisions. The study resulted in the identification of 113 advanced human factors engineering tools.
