Abstract : Protective measures have been enacted to mitigate the deleterious effects of landfill leachate on ground and surface waters. One such measure has been to remove items classified as Household Hazardous Wastes from the solid waste stream prior to landfill disposal. Even though the alternative methods of disposal may be very costly, no effort has been made to assess the impact of Household Hazardous Wastes on landfill leachates and, subsequently, on receiving waters. Therefore, a model is needed to assess this impact accurately and determine which, indeed if any, items should be removed from the solid waste stream prior to landfill disposal. The model proposed to assess the impact of Household Hazardous Wastes is developed in two steps.
