Abstract : In this report we have considered the dynamics of the plasma opening switch from the perspective of an electromagnetic wave propagating in a coaxial waveguide. It is found that switches with plasma densities in the 10 to the 12th power range or lower will allow energy to couple to normal modes in the plasma and propagate through the switch. The energy propagates at the Alfven speed or higher. At densities above 10 to the 13th power the picture changes to one where the dissipative properties of the plasma prevent direct electromagnetic energy propagation. The energy must penetrate the plasma by diffusion. This report addresses the microinstabilities that lead to this diffusion picture. Consistent with this picture several suggestions are made for enhancing the conduction time of the plasma opening switch. (rh)
