Abstract : Assessment and development of students' leadership skills is one of the curricular challenges of the U.S. Army War College. Assessment centers are a technique of predicting future job behavior by observing and evaluating performance in simulations. They are widely accepted for selection, promotion and development decisions. The techniques are now in limited use in the War College. This study explores the background of assessment center techniques in general, in the Army and at the War College. It argues that the techniques should continue to play a valuable role in War College student development and makes recommendations for improving their present use.
