Abstract : This report presents the results of investigations to: 1) confirm and quantify the existence of buried pails of pesticides on the site; and 2) assess the migration of pesticides through soils and groundwater. Geophysical surveys using a metal detector and magnetometer revealed a large metallic anomaly in the area of the investigation. Subsequent test pit sampling of soils and liquid wastes in the area of this anomaly confirmed the presence of buried 5-gallon pails of pesticides occupying an area approximately 15x25 feet in plan. Groundwater sampling showed evidence of pesticide contamination at least 30 feet downslope of the burial area. The hydraulic gradient on the site is complex and additional monitoring wells are necessary onsite before a groundwater remediation plan can be properly evaluated. As an interim remedial action, Dames & Moore has proposed that the active source of contamination be removed, even before additional field studies proceed.
