Abstract : The crystallography discussed in this report is part of a larger program involving synthesis and characterization of novel energetic materials. The goal of this project is to identify and synthesize new materials that will lead to safer and higher performance munitions. Promising new materials must be affordable, derived from readily available starting materials, chemically stable, insensitive to heat, shock, and friction, and yet, they must also be high explosives. New materials must have dramatically improved properties over existing materials so that the increase in performance makes changes in the manufacturing processes cost effective. In the past an intuitive approach to designing new materials was used. Because dramatic improvements in performance are desired, a more pragmatic approach is now used. Empirical predictive schemes are used to screen and suggest possible candidates for synthesis. The empirical schemes used to screen new materials are being continually modified and improved as our understanding of the fundamental effects of molecular and crystal structure on explosive properties increases. The work reported here is part of the effort to increase our understanding of these effects.
