Abstract : The gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier is investigated with the purpose of developing the necessary analytical and numerical tools to allow analysis of proposed device based solutions to problems that currently limit the usefulness of the device. These solutions involve a fuller development of a scheme to increase the oscillation start current by use of spatially located, frequency selective loss mechanisms. The second problem considered is the narrow bandwidth of the cyclotron resonance maser interaction. A reverse injection scheme is discussed. It is found that the available analytical techniques are severely limited in their ability to analyze and simulate the proposed solutions, therefore indicating the development of the new tools discussed in this report.
