Abstract : The incremental multi-parameter (IMP) algorithm is described from the point of view of analysing data from arrays of sensors. This algorithm makes use of the conventional beamformer as a key component of an iterative analysis of the data, yet is able to outperform alternative high resolution estimators such as MUSIC by 10-15 dB. The algorithm is suitable for general array geometries, and is also capable of handling single snapshot data and coherent signals. This memorandum presents preliminary results from Monte Carlo analyses of the performance of IMP, in comparison with MUSIC and RootMUSIC. An accelerated beam space version of the algorithm (EPM/IMP) is introduced, and its performance evaluated against EPM/MUSIC and EPM/RootMUSIC. Conclusions are drawn regarding the reasons for the high performance of IMP. Great Britain. (rrh)
