Abstract : The goal of this thesis was to determine a means for automating the planning section of the Air University's Theater Warfare Exercise (TWX). By delving into the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Database Management Systems, this thesis presents a flexible, efficient, and effective platform for realizing the above goal. This thesis presents the requirements, analysis, and solutions for the realization of an automated red player for TWX. The Theater War Exercise (TWX) is a five day, two sided, theater level, air-power employment decision making exercise. The decisions required are typical of those that an air component commander and staff would make. TWX is a two-sided game where the blue team is played by a student seminar and the red team is played by one or more dedicated Air Force Wargaming Center personnel who attempt to provide a realistic red opponent. Personnel at the Air Force Wargaming Center determined that too much time was required for a red player to render an effective game. It was determined that an integration of artificial intelligence and relational database management systems would provide a flexible, innovative, and cost-effective approach for automation. An object-oriented approach was used to determine the necessary structures for automating the planning section of TWX. This included the replacement of nuclear strike aircraft, the beddown of aircraft from an augmentation base, and the resolution of logistic shortfalls at each airbase due to attrition and movement of aircraft.
