Abstract : This report describes the achievements over a four-year period on a research and development program to design, develop and fabricate an optically-pumped atomic standard (OPAS). The OPAS device is a cesium beam atomic frequency standard in which the state selection and state detection are both accomplished by optical pumping using semiconductor laser diodes. Special emphasis is given in this report to the problems associated with the use of semiconductor laser diodes in this application, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical development findings.
