Abstract : This report summarizes the analysis and experiments which were conducted to identify sources of Close to Carrier (CTC) noise in semiconductor laser diodes. The experiments were conducted. Following the initial experiments a set of criteria was established for a fiber optic system with improved noise. An analog microwave optical system was fabricated to verify the results of the study at a frequency of 8.1 GHz. The results show a CTC noise of -95 DBc/Hz from the 8.1 GHz carrier, well below the CTC noise of the best crystal oscillators. The report recommends that for improved RF phase stability in fiber optic links, greater than 60 dB isolation is recommended to protect the laser diode from reflection, less than 5mm separate the diode from the first optical reflection, and that the laser be temperature controlled to 0.1 C or better.
