Abstract : The city of Elkader, Iowa, requested that the city's flooding problem from the Turkey River be investigated. This initial appraisal was undertaken to determine if there is sufficient evidence for an economically feasible project to justify the continuation of the reconnaissance study. Two structural alternatives were evaluated as possible solutions to the flooding problem. Plan A would protect the residential areas between Mulberry and Boardman Streets to Bronson Street from the 100-year frequency flooding event. Plan B would protect the commercial and residential areas from Bridge Street to Bronson Street from a 100-year frequency flooding event. These alternatives were studied on a preliminary basis to determine if a plan is economically feasible and warrants further study. All of the alternatives were determined to be economically infeasible and, therefore, the study has been terminated.
