Abstract : At the request of the Headquarters Air Combat Command Bioenvironmental Engineering Office, personnel from Armstrong Laboratory Water Quality Branch conducted a wastewater characterization survey at Langley AFB VA from 4 to 15 May 92. The survey was not requested in response to a contamination incident, rather it was requested in an effort to further reduce existing pollution generated by the base. The survey measured levels of contamination for metals, oils and grease, total petroleum hydrocarbons, ammonia, purgeable organic hydrocarbons, base/neutral and acid extractable organic compounds at selected sites of industrial activity throughout the base. Single day composite samples were taken for a minimum of 3 days at 14 sites. Grab samples were taken where required by Environmental Protection Agency procedures. Results showed some low levels of contamination with oil and grease, silver, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and trichloroethane were detected at some sites. The report provides the base suggestions for additional sampling and potential sources of contamination. Wastewater, Langley AFB
