Abstract : Rising health care costs are focusing national attention on the health care industry. While the current proposed national health care insurance plan is under construction, our health care system is being scrutinized in order to ascertain why medical costs continue growing so rapidly. One overlooked component of burgeoning medical costs is medical waste management. A realistic analysis of present and future health care costs must consider the growing amount of medical waste and the concomitant increase in its regulation. The problems associated with medical waste management are not unique to the United States.
