Abstract : This monograph identifies the requirement to improve the integration between crisis response and follow-on forces. Integration enables the United States to apply its national security strategy while reducing the size of the military forces and retaining the ability to execute force projection operations. This monograph examines theories developed by Dr. James J. Schneider, Martin Van Creveld and the Training and Doctrine Command to identify the command, control and communication (C3) requirements, systems and applications needed to execute force projection operations. Historical examples from Operation Just Cause in Panama, exercises at the National Training Center and from Operation Desert Shield in Southwest Asia, provide examples to highlight theory. This monograph provides insights on how planners can use the C3 requirements, systems and applications to identify additional tasks that enable follow-on forces to immediately execute successful operations with operational effects. This approach will assist the military build down in structure and retain its edge over potential threats.
