Abstract : During 1993, the U.S. Navy continued to conduct a program to monitor flora, fauna, and their ecological relationships for possible effects from electromagnetic (EM) fields produced by the Navy's Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Communications System. Physiological, developmental, behavioral, and ecological variables for dominant biota in upland and riverine habitats near the Naval Radio Transmitting Facility at Republic, Michigan (NRTF-Republic) have been monitored since 1982. The NRTF-Republic was intermittently energized at low amperages beginning in early 1986. Electric current and periods of energization were then gradually increased until 1989, when the transmitter became a fully operational facility. A split-plot or blocked strategy was used to examine biological variables for possible effects from EM exposure. Reports compiled in this document present the progress of these studies through 1993. Final results and conclusions are expected after all data have been analyzed in, 1994. Investigators for similar studies completed in Wisconsin concluded that there were no EM bioeffects from intermittent or full operation of the transmitter in that state.
