Family visitation in intensive care units is reviewed in this paper with regard to the different types of policies available, ie. restricted, contract, flexible, and open. In addition, literature is covered that addresses patient response to visiting, family studies, and studies that show the affect an nursing personnel. Implications for nursing and the role of the clinical nurse specialist in dealing with relevant visiting issues are discussed. A proposed research design to investigate restricted visitation versus open visitation, plus providing the family with an information booklet is included. The research would look at meeting family needs and satisfaction levels of nurses. The paper also provides recommendations for nurses an bow family, patient, and nursing needs can be met with additional research questions for the future.
