Abstract : During the summer of 1976, an intensive survey of fee simple lands was conducted in the proposed Long Branch reservoir, Macon County, Missouri. The survey resulted in the identification of 262 new archaeological sites (190 prehistoric and 72 historic). In addition, 31 previously recorded sites were revisited. This volume contains an ecological analysis, survey methods, analyses, and recommendations. The introduction includes the history of archaeological work in the Chariton River basin as well as a preliminary analysis of environmental model in order to gain both an understanding of the reservoir area as well as to begin to understand settlement location in relation to resources. Preliminary analyses of artifacts, settlement patterns, and regional site functions, although not stipulated in the scope of work, were provided as basic premises for further testing of a more detailed nature. This report accompanies Volume IIA and IIB of the same title. Long Branch Lake, Macon County, Chariton River basin, Archeology survey, Historic sites, Prehistoric sites, Missouri.
