Abstract : The Defense Logistics Agency is responsible for providing effective and economical logistics support to U.S. military forces. Its inventory, excluding fuel, grew from $3.5 to $9.4 billion between fiscal years 1981 and 1988. At the end of fiscal year 1988, 37 percent, or $3.5 billion was excess to known requirements for peacetime operating and war reserve stocks. The Subcommittee on Readiness, House Committee on Armed Services, and the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs asked GAO to determine the amount of potential excess stocks on order and evaluate the process used for terminating excess orders
