Abstract : During recent peace negotiations between Israel and Syria, Israel's Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, has declared that Israel is willing to withdraw from the Golan Heights in order to secure "real peace" with Syria. Although no definitive plan of withdrawal has been disclosed at this time, reactions to the idea of pulling out have been mixed. Supporters argue that Israel no longer needs the Golan and should quickly withdraw to show its earnestness to have peace with Syria, while opponents fear that a withdrawal would be a serious blow to state security. The purpose of this study is to defend the argument that the Golan Heights are geostrategically vital to Israel's national interests and, therefore, should not be returned to Syria in whole or in part.
