Abstract : With a constant need to solve scientific and engineering problems of ever growing complexity, there is a corresponding need for software tools that assist in generating solutions with minimal user involvement. Parallel computation is becoming indispensable in solving the large-scale problems that arise in science and engineering applications. Adaptivity is at the center of efficient methods for solving partial differential equations often used in such applications. Yet the use of parallel computation and adaptive techniques is limited by the high cost of developing the needed software. To overcome this difficulty, we advocate a comprehensive approach to the development of scalable architecture-independent software for adaptive solutions of partial differential equations.
