Abstract : This report records the study and response of in situ luminescent organisms to hydrodynamic stimuli in a well characterized flow field. In particular; using fully developed pipe flow: (1) the bioluminescent response of freshly collected organisms are compared in laminar and turbulent flow, (2) threshold values of wall shear stress, T(wall), are determined, and (3) the flash level of individual organisms as a function of T(wall) are examined. Several trends describing the response of in situ luminescent organisms to fully developed pipe flow stimuli are reported. Further work with a greater range of T(wal)l and Retrans values is necessary to corroborate this initial study. Also the reaction of these luminescent organisms to varying shear stress (transitional flows) and acceleration (developing flows) needs to be investigated.
