Abstract : This memorandum discusses the National Security Strategy of the United States and the planning and capabilities of U.S. Naval Forces to support it, and to further America's vital National Interests. They include the protection of America's citizens, its interests, institutions and way of life. The National Security Strategy addresses five major objectives for maintaining a strong defense capability: Dealing with Major Regional Contingencies; Providing a Credible Overseas Presence; Countering Mass Destruction weapons; Contributing to Multilateral Peace Operations, and, Supporting Counterterrorism efforts and other National Security Objectives.
