Abstract : In this Phase I program, we have demonstrated that electric field poling is an advantageous technique for manufacturing frequency doublers. We demonstrated bulk periodic poling with 15 micron period lithium niobate samples, and showed that we can overcome the problems with electrical breakdown. From our other testing results, we can predict that our periodic poled samples will perform near the theoretical optimum. While the poling process shows peculiarities such as a strong crystal axis dependence and a complicated voltage-time scaling, we conclude that the process is ready for development into a reliable manufacturing process. jg
