Abstract : The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has built and currently maintains 19 major concrete-armored breakwaters within the United States. Many of these have been surveyed to assess both the hydraulic and structural performance of the concrete armoring (Melby and Turk 1994). Maintenance of most of these structures has been in excess of original estimates, and there has been much speculation as to the causes of premature armor failure. The Corps has used several types of armor units for building and repairing these structures including the tetrapod tribar, and dolos. None of these has had exceptional performance. Now a new armor unit, Core-Loc(tm) (Figure 1), promises to be superior to those used in the past.
