Abstract : A formal approach for evaluating the reliability of computer software is through probabilistic models and statistical methods. This paper is an expository overview of the literature on the former. The various probability models for software failure can be classified into two groups; the merits of these groups are discussed and an example of their use in decision problems is given in some detail. The direction of current and future research is contemplated.
