Abstract : Applied Research Associates, Inc. and North Dakota State University, under contract to the Air Force Civil Engineering and Services Center are developing a Laser Induced Fluorescence-Cone Penetration Technique (LIF-CPT) for environmental site investigations. As part of this contract, a two-day demonstration of the system was conducted at Carswell AFB, Texas. Using this tool, the soils near the Base Service Station were investigated to determine soil stratigraphy, groundwater table elevation and the presence 0 gasoline contamination. The LIF-CPT determined that the soil stratigraphy consisted of soft clays underlaid by interbedded sands and silty clays above the bedrock. These sand layers are generally consistent throughout the area investigated and represent potential contaminant pathways into the West Fork of the Trinity River. The LIF identified gasoline contamination in the soils near the BSS underground storage tanks. The soil across the road was not identified as contaminated; however the LIF-CPT was only calibrated for jet fuels under the contract and detection limits for gasoline are currently unknown. Results for jet fuels indicate that LIF-CPT has a detection limit of 100 ppm for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). Preliminary field testing did confirm that the LIF-CPT does respond to gasoline and can indicate the presence of high-level contaminants.
