Abstract : This document describes the process and results of the alternatives assessment conducted for the shell section 36 trenches (site 36-3), approximately 31 trenches used from 1952 to 1966 for land disposal of liquid and solid wastes generated from pesticide manufacture. They have been shown to be a source of ground water contamination. A dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) is also believed to have originated from the trenches. The assessment includes the following: (1) Site characteristics. (2) Discussion of alternative strategies and technologies, (3) Evaluation of alternatives, and (4) Conclusions. The preferred interim response action consists of (1) a physical barrier encircling the trenches and (2) a soil and vegetative cover.
