Abstract : The flexibility of Multiple-Beam Antennas (MBAs) for Satellite Communications (SATCOM) systems has long been recognized. Their potential to handle the ever-growing demand for increased communications requirements and their ability to communicate with a large number of earth stations have made MBAs most desirable in satellite antenna systems. This report outlines the benefits and considerations that revolve around the use of MBAs for Military Satellite Communications (MILSATCOM) applications. It also presents some of the most commonly used MBA configurations. The design and selection of a satellite MBA system are limited by the fundamental limitations particular to each type of MBA system. Engineers are forced to make compromises between overall antenna performance and some of the design and physical constraints presented in this report.
