Abstract : Insulin-like growth factor II is a potent mitogen for breast tumor epithelium. The purpose of this study is to analyze IGF-II expression in a series of breast tumor biopsy specimens and determine whether IGF-II expression relates to clinical indicators and outcome. We have processed over 300 cases by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Of 240 cases scored so far, IGF-II protein expression was absent in 16%, low in 23%, moderate in 43% and high in 18%. These data correlate well with the data obtained by in situ hybridization. Preliminary correlation with clinical parameters and outcome shows that IGF-II expression may be associated with poor prognosis in patients who are negative for estrogen and progesterone receptor.
