Abstract : The broadening of the sodium (Na) D-line emission was studied in detail. It was found that higher flame temperature causes more broadening, and that there is an interaction between Na and nitrogen (present either in an oxidant or an additive) which enlarges an emission shoulder 550 nm and greatly increases the broadening D- lines. Calculations of the energy output of the visible spectra were made and compared to the theoretical black body energy. In addition, calculations were made of the energy possible if each sodium atom emitted one photon. jg p.3
