Abstract : The goals of this project involve the use of innovative acoustic techniques to study new materials and new developments in solid state physics. Major accomplishments include (a) the submission of a Phys. Rev. Lett. paper on the use of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) to determine the isotropy of a quasicrystal, (b) the identification of a problem with the RUS analysis technique, (c) the construction of a major facility for the study of fracture, and (d) the preparation of a draft of a paper on a resonant photoacoustic technique.
