Abstract : The theoretical analysis of synthetic aperture techniques presented in Memoran duni 4532 is applied to the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of ship targets. The point spread function of an ISAR system is derived and discussed iii detail. The explicit representation of phase information within our formalism makes possible the first thorough analysis of interference effects in synthetic aperture im ages of closely spaced scatterers. Effects of errors in motion compensation are also discussed in considerably greater depth than in earlier work. Computer simulation has provided us with a useful tool with which to verify our analytical results; we describe our simulation method and present a comprehensive selection of simulated images illustrating and confirming our theoretical analysis. Finally some practical implications of our results for the autofocusing of ISAR images are discussed. (KAR) P. 2
