Abstract : This paper examines the relevancy of the Naval Reserve Force as an operational option for the CINC's. The entering position is that the Naval Reserve Force is relevant, and as such provides the CINC with an extremely valuable option for dealing with both peacetime and wartime operational contingencies. The overarching caveat, however, and the thesis of the paper, is that in order to really integrate the Naval Reserve Force into the planning processes, the CINC must have a sound appreciation for the structure, capability and accessibility of the Naval Reserve Force, as well as its strategic culture.
