Abstract : This report documents the results of a prototype commissioned by the Navy to study the feasibility of using electronic data interchange (EDI) as a vehicle for automating the exchange of health and safety information between commercial trading partners and the government. The results of the prototype suggest that the use of enabling technologies such as EDI can greatly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Navy's material safety data sheet (MSDS) process. Currently there is little use of EDI to exchange MSDSs among trading partners. As government EDI initiatives mature, however, the Navy can expect increased use of EDI for many business functions including hazardous materials communication. The Navy should therefore plan to implement EDI as a primary method of data collection. The Navy should also identity current and emerging hazardous material information requirements that may be satisfied through the use of an electronic MSDS. Finally, the Navy should identity other emerging technologies with the potential to improve health and safety data collection and distribution to Navy employees and systems.
