Abstract : Since the early 198Os the Department of Energy (DOE) has been planning for or constructing various facilities to treat and dispose of 34 million gallons of high-level radioactive waste stored in underground tanks at the savannah major facility involved Is the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DwPF). As a result of concerns about potential problems with the DWPF and delays in its scheduled start-up, the Chairman of the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Subcommittee, House Committee on Government Operations, asked GAO to review the status of the DWPF and other facilities. This report addresses cost and schedule issues for the DWPF and other facilities, management problems identified and improvements initiated, and technical issues and other uncertainties that could affect costs and the schedule.
