Abstract : This report examines the German debate over peacekeeping, how Germany is moving to shed the political and military constraints on the use of the German armed forces, and the potential role that Germany might play in future peace support operations. How Germany has sought to come to terms with the challenge of peacekeeping operations in the post-Cold War era is an important story in its own right. However, given Germany's influential role in Europe and beyond, the German experience sets an important precedent and may offer some insights for other countries that face primarily political constraints to increasing their contribution to peacekeeping operations.
