Abstract : Under this Air Force grant we have begun the investigation into the ability of the embedded impedance elements to control the far field phase of an individual element with the anticipation that this element can be incorporated into an array and used in a manner of similar to phase steered array using external phase shifters. The advantage of this approach is that the phase shifting devices are embedded in the antenna and are extremely simple in composition. This eliminates several connections to the antenna elements as well as the need for external devices. The potential payoffs include significant weight reduction and increased reliability with fewer mechanical connections. The total reliability, maintainability, and efficiency of the elements and the array will be increased significantly with this device.
