Abstract : A data acquisition system is presented that allows multiple channels of information to be captured and stored at high rates. The modular architecture of this system allows the data collection capability to be tailored to specific scenarios by the straightforward addition or subtraction of standardized components. Each signal that is to be monitored is routed to a separate analog-to-digital conversion and storage board that adjusts the magnitude and baseline of the input analog signals, performs high-speed analog to digital conversions, and stores the conversion values in short-term random access memory. Each channel can acquire and record 2,048 data points of 8-bit data at sampling rates up to 5 MHz. The actions of the individual conversion and storage boards are coordinated by a centralized data acquisition and storage control module. Following the data acquisition process, a data transfer control module is used to orchestrate the transfer of the recorded information from the short-term random access memory to the hard drive of a personal computer for processing and long-term storage. This report provides all the technical information that is required to maintain, expand, or duplicate this apparatus.
