Abstract : Applications of satellite microwave measurements to aircraft icing have been restricted to areas over the ocean. In this study, data from the DMSP SSM/I polar orbiter high frequency channels (85.5 GHz) and GOES 7 infrared (IR) and visible data are used to retrieve cloud liquid water (CLW) over land areas and determine if it is feasible to develop an icing index from this information. The area selected for the study was over the northern plains during the first weeks of February and March 1992 when icing conditions were known to exist.
