Abstract : The role of the family of reactive oxides of nitrogen, NO(y) composed primarily the lower troposphere of nitric oxide (NO) + nitrogen dioxide (NO2) + peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) + nitric acid (HNO3) + particulate nitrate (NO3), in the photochemical production of and correlation with tropospheric ozone is thought to be well known. Thus a knowledge of the distribution, transport and sources of tropospheric NO and NO(y) is critical to the understanding of the effectiveness of ozone precursor control strategies to the development of accurate regional and global atmospheric models, particularly rural areas. In this study, measurements of the mixing ratios of NO and NO(y) were made over a semi-urban area of central North Carolina at the surface (10 meters) and on a tower at a height of 250 meters (820 feet) and 433 meters (1420 feet) above ground level (A from December 1994 to February 1995. jg p.3
