Abstract : E HAVE INITIATED STUDIES OF PROGRAMMED CELL DEATH, OR POPTOSIS, IN HUMAN BREAST CANCER CELLS. Using the MCF-V reast cancer cell line, we have found that cell growth is stimulated by supplementing the culture medium with l%%-estradio1, and inhibited by charcoal stripping serum o remove steroid hormones. We have found that MCF-% cells are resistant to induction of apoptosis by the calcium pump inhibitorr thapsigargin, ostensibly due to expression of Bcl-2. We have found that estrogen ithdrawal decreases the level of Bcl-2 expression, but does not increase the susceptibility of cells to apoptosis due to constitutive Bcl-2 expression.
