Abstract : This project extended understanding of vortex behavior in oxide superconductors in two important directions. First, we made discoveries regarding the morphology of the defects that pin vortices in films very effectively and regarding the nature of the phase transition that separates the low magnetic field, low temperature vortex glass from the high field, high temperature vortex liquid. In both cases, our results challenge the status quo. Second, we demonstrated fabrication of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) films with a variety of dopants for Cu, and we showed that only a few percent of dopant has a dramatic effect on the superconducting properties, in a way that might be useful in some superconducting devices.
