Abstract : Preliminary experimentation involving selective breaking of graphite and boron filaments in prepreg tape by prestressing has demonstrated a significant increase in the tensile strength and a corresponding sizeable reduction in the dispersion of test valves in the cured composite as compared to unprocessed or unstressed prepreg cured laminate test data. These observations resulted from preliminary testing of laminates fabricated from prestress processed graphite prepreg tape and compared to as-received unprocessed material. The purpose of this contract was to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the concept of prestressing graphite fibers by fabricating laminates from as-received and prestressed prepreg and testing statistically significant sample sizes for unidirectional tension, angle ply tension, short beam shear, and compression strength. jg p.4
