Abstract : The effects of electron radiation on Ultem, a polyetherimide manufactured by General Electric, were studied for doses from 2 x 10 (exp 9) to 6 x 10(exp 9) rad. Specimens for tensile property testing and for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic measurements of molecular structure were studied. The spectroscopic data were used to determine the effects of radiation on molecular structures, and these effects were used to explain the radiation-generated changes in tensile properties.
