Abstract : Techniques used for the testing of soils for petroleum contamination were researched. The focus was on the probable accuracy of the petroleum content data and the possible problems resulting from the testing techniques utilized, General information regarding petroleum in soil environments and methods of obtaining soil samples was included provided to support the discussion. Laboratory and field methods for measuring petroleum contamination in soils were included with an emphasis on the accuracy of the data obtained. Information concerning quality assurance of soil sampling data was included to assist in assessing ongoing soil investigations. Two sets of data from soil investigations under the direction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer District Europe were reviewed. jg p.5
