Abstract : As directed by the House Committee on Armed Services in its report accompanying the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 1995, the General Accounting Office (GAO) reviewed possible civilian agency use of the supercomputing capabilities at the Department of Defense's (DOD) National Test Facility (NTF). GAO was specifically directed to include, but not limit its study to, using these resources to support (1) the Department of Energy in monitoring oil pipeline leakage, (2) the Department of Education in developing on-line educational software, (3) the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in developing an on-line medical imagery repository, (4) the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FMA) in developing innovative emergency reaction simulations, and (5) the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in climatological modeling.
