Abstract : This final report summarizes the work performed on the AASERT-sponsored program dealing with 'Gradient Index Devices from Polycerams'. The purpose of this project was to develop a new processing method to create large dimension (bulk) inorganic/organic Polyceram materials for optical lens applications. During this project, prototype monolithic and gradient refractive index (GRIN) optical lens materials were successfully formed by chemically synthesizing Polyceram precursor solutions and depositing tailored multiple coatings in order to form self-supporting materials. Determination and tailoring of the appropriate Polyceram chemistry as well as coating, deposition, and drying parameters resulted in the ability to freestanding and highly transparent optical materials with desired gradients in refractive index. jg
