Abstract : Current techniques used to discriminate between sea clutter and targets, based on using the amplitude of the reflected signal, are described and applied to data collected experimentally. A new method which uses information contained in the phase of the reflected energy is described and is also applied to this data set and a significant improvement in the ability to detect a small target within this data is demonstrated. Issues associated with the implementation of this new algorithm in an existing radar 5 stem are then considered and several feasible a roaches are described. (AN)
