Abstract : The objective of this program was to develop improved cellulose acetate hollow-fiber membranes for reverse osmosis desalination. Two types of hollow-fiber membranes were investigated - asymmetric and composite. Asymmetric membranes are prepared by forming a dense selective surface layer on a porous gelled substructure of cellulose diacetate or cellulose triacetate. Composite membranes are formed by coating a porous nonselective substrate with an ultra-thin selective film. jg p8
